Portrait Sketch, Graphite

January 4, 2013

I’ve been playing with portraits lately, and have had mixed results with painting them in gouache.  It’s a bit confusing, because when I first started painting, I did several faces in gouache, and was really happy with them.  I think I just haven’t quite recaptured the right combination of paint colors, consistency, and brushwork yet.

Meanwhile, I occasionally shoot photos of myself to use as a subject.  I have become what I have always considered one of my favorite subjects: an older person with wrinkles.

This started out to be the base drawing for a gouache painting, but I’m having so much fun drawing, that I’m going to just continue with graphite.  I’ll do another one in paint.  Or I’ll turn this into a mixed media piece by adding watercolor… or not.  The point is that I’m enjoying myself doing something I’ve always loved to do.
