A Visit with Julie Myers

July 5, 2012

Shippensburg, Pennsylvania

Hopefully, Julie Myers won’t mind if I use an image from her Facebook page.  If you’re in the Fogelsville, Pennsylvania area on July 15, you should definitely stop in and see Julie’s work.

One of the treats we’re beginning to experience as we travel is meeting face to face with artists we’ve become acquainted with through online forums and social media such as Facebook.  Julie Myers has been a FB friend for some time now, and when we started wandering into Pennsylvania, Julie extended an invitation to visit her in her studio.  We jumped at the chance, because we had become big fans of her miniature paintings.

Many of her little paintings are no more than 1″ to 2″ high.  Working in oils, she paints a wide range of subjects, including studies from Old Masters, Amish life, and animals.  The detail in some of these little gems is wonderful.

Julie’s primary market is the dollhouse industry, which includes people producing all kinds of miniatures, and the collectors who buy them.  In addition to making her own miniature frames, she has recently begun designing and printing her own line of dollhouse wallpaper, and printing her tiny paintings on fabric, which can be used for miniature drapes and pillowcases.

Even with the comparison items, like the pencil and paper clip, the online versions of these pieces simply do not do them justice.  You think you understand, but when you actually see these tiny paintings in a display case, and actually hold them in your hand, then you truly appreciate their size.

Julie uses display cases to show and sell her art at shows aimed primarily at the doll house collectors.  She also has an Etsy shop at http://www.etsy.com/shop/JLMart?ref=pr_shop_more.

Nell and I truly enjoyed our visit with Julie at her studio, and we’re looking forward to watching her develop it further.  Whatever she does, she’s got the talent to make it work.
