Notes on “Summer Shadows”

Summer Shadows, 8x10, Gouache

I could paint scenes like this all day, every day, and be very content.  Small, uncomplicated, intimate scenes with sunlight and strong shadows seem to draw me in.  This is from another one of my 70mph highway photos.  I don’t remember where it was, and it doesn’t really matter.  Little spots like this can be found constantly along highways and country roads.  All one has to do is look out the window.

After painting subjects drawn from a hat for the last few weeks, it’s been a real pleasure to just paint what I feel like painting.  This is just simply a serene, quiet little scene that could be anywhere.  And that’s what I like to paint.  Here’s a detail, over-enlarged and sharpened a bit for those intested in the brushwork:
