Mystic Hideaway

March 16, 2010

11×14 ~ Gouache on cold press Crescent board

There’s a river that runs through Mohican State Park in Ohio, part of a major flood control system. There are occasional small islands in the middle of the river. On one side of some of these little islands, rocks have been placed to form a low dam. Thus, water rushes by on one side, and on the other there are little stretches of fairly calm water. Since the water isn’t very deep in these places, they almost appear to be wading pools for recreational purposes. This is the dam at the end of one of those little islands. The place was almost deserted when we were there, and even with the sound of moving water, there was a quiet, almost mystical feel to the scene.
