New little street scenes

December 27, 2009

We’ve been in Austin, Texas for over a week, welcoming our eighth grandchild into the world.  I took my painting box, and while two grandmothers hovered over the new mom and baby, doing what grandmothers do, I managed to get a little painting done.  Actually, I got a lot done, taking 12 little 5×7 street scenes to various stages of completion.

My son-in-law’s mother gave me access to a ton of photos from her trip to Italy last year, and I’m really looking forward to exploring the possibilities they will provide in terms of old buildings, narrow streets, color and character.  The ones I’ve posted here include a couple of those, along with some scenes I’ve stumbled on in the north Dallas area.  I’m trying very hard to keep the figures very simple in these scenes.  I left a couple of brushes at home that I could have used to good advantage on these, and I also find that when I work from my plastic field palette, I tend to use thinner paint.  I think it’s because the paint dries on the palette much faster, and I don’t put as much out at one time.

Here are a few…  All are 5×7, gouache on cold press Crescent board
