Down By The Riverside

August 25, 2009

I’ve been wanting to do more river scenes, and while in Ohio, Nell’s relatives were kind enough to drive us around in the countryside two days in a row.  I got a lot of reference material while walking along the banks of the Mohican Waterway and the Mohawk River.  I hope to capture the feelings of peace and tranquility I felt as I just stood and observed, and recorded the scenes with the camera.

The beauty of doing a painting like this is the sense of being there, in that place, once again, while I paint.  I often find myself transported back to the moment, experiencing the same quiet, the same smells, the serenity of the place as I stand again on the shoreline.  This is the first attempt at reliving the moment.  I’ve updated the image after doing a little touching up.  It’s gouache, of course, 8×10, on Crescent board.
